The Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd says, “ it is important that the Australian people return to the close relationship they had with their neighboring countries and that the Australian people should study Asian languages”. Now, in the Australian schools, there is strong desire to learn Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian Language). This renewed interest in learning Bahasa Indonesia is growing among the Australian schools. Meanwhile, the Indonesian Government currently encourages the schools to establish link with the international schools in order to stimulate their educational quality. The mutual momentum is raising for the Indonesian schools to experience learning in Australia, and on the other hand the Australian schools can practice to learn Bahasa Indonesia.
The initiative for the Indonesian and the Australian schools to work together is highly recommended by OECD and UNICEF organization. Both world organizations recognize the benefits of educational interactions which create and enforce educational networks and will facilitate the mutual exchange of curriculum and other educational opportunities for teachers and students. It is the time to create educational cooperation between Indonesia and Australia through sister school relationships. The efforts are gathering its momentum when an educational delegate coming from SMA Negeri 1 Serang to visit the Mac Robertson Girls High School in Victoria last October 2008.
The Serang education delegate was lead by Bapak Drs. Aziz Haidir which is the Principal of SMA Negeri 1 Serang. He was accompanied by two teachers relating with the department of international affairs, representative officers from department of education Serang Regency, parent association, and ten students. They were welcome by Ibu Mona Maria Bonifasia, the education councilor from Consul General RI Melbourne, at Mac Robertson Girls High School. During in here, the girls studied at Mac Robertson Girls High School and the boys were placed in Melbourne High School. They studied a number of subjects by shadowing their Australian mates and then they experienced home stay with the Australian family. The Serang students enjoyed learning in totally new and challenging situation, and the Melbourne students are happy to establish link and friendship through practicing Bahasa Indonesia before they had examination in Bahasa Indonesia subject. SMA Negeri 1 Serang and Mac Robertson Girls High School have reached an agreement to make educational cooperation to further develop kinds of educational cooperation in the future. The agreement was officially signed at consul general office Melbourne at 17 October 2008 which were witnessed by Bapak Hadi Prambastoro representing the Consul General RI Melbourne. At the end of the program, SMA Negeri 1 Serang students and Mac Robertson Girls High School held farewell party when students performed cultural songs and dances.
Just recently, during the Easter Holidays Ms Robyn Elmi and Miss Andrea Jones made the journey to Indonesia to formalize a Sister-School Relationship between Weeroona College Bendigo and SMA Negeri Ciputat 2 Tangerang. This school is located in Tangerang, Banten Province, Java which is about one and half hours drive west of the capital city of Jakarta. During their stay, Miss Jones and Ms Elmi ran an English and Art Workshop for the senior students and participated in English, Indonesian, Art and Music classes. The Indonesian students were delighted to be presented with creative, Australian themed bookmarks, as well as letters with gifts that were prepared by students from WCB. Both schools strongly believe that communicating with real people will strongly motivate our respective students to pursue their language studies and they look forward to continuing to build a strong on-going relationship that is beneficial to students and staff at both schools. SMA Negeri Ciputat 2 Tangerang intends to visit Weeronna later this year to enhance the cooperation and to seek further development of this cooperation.
The sister school relationship is supported by a number of organizations and individual assistance: Victorian Indonesian Language Teachers Association ( VILTA). Co-ordinator for Indonesian LOTE for Victoria, Indonesian Society Association in Victoria ( Perwira) and as well as Consul General RI in Melbourne. The school link is voluntarily mediated by Pak Herli Salim for the Indonesian schools and Dr. Peter Waterworth for the Australian schools ( HS, 2009).
